Flowers from Mariko tells the story of a girl named Mariko and her family after they are released from Japanese Internment Camp following World War II Prior to the war Mariko’s father owned a gardening business When their family was forced into captivity he was devastated to lose not only their freedom but their family business Living in government provided housing after being released Mariko and her father work together to create a makeshift garden with whatever they can find Eventually their efforts allow them to get back on their feet as a family starting the emotional healing process after the previous years of adversity The major themes in this story are leaning on each other in times of need being patient and not focusing on the pastI give this book a four star rating because although its messages were powerful and very insightful I felt that the story had a somewhat abrupt ending There was a lack of an explanation of what happened to the family in the long term The visual components of the book were also very compelling full of color and detail inviting the reader to absorb all that the book offersI personally thought this book was very moving and worth reading I value how it made a complicated part of history a little easier to understand which is very important if a mature topic is going to be included in a children’s book I also really liked that this book emphasized the importance of family and how they can help you through difficult times I would recommend this book to slightly older children ones that are easily able to understand the complex circumstances that premise this book This book would also be a great addition to teaching about World War II and Japanese Internment sparking a discussion of what we can learn from our history The book would also be great for highlighting the importance of working together as well as family
