Faced with future of drugged servitude Tasha makes the only decision possible run But stowing away on a smuggler's ship puts her in the sights of privateer Captain Garrick ben Khalid Now she has to prove she's than just a pretty geisha find the source of a deadly disease and escape the clutches of her sociopathic fatherWhat a terrific world The story grabbed me right away because it had a very likeable and capable heroine facing some rather horrific future due to the dealings of her father I really enjoyed the plot and TashaWhat keeps this story from being a solid 4 stars are my personal dislikes for the lust at first sight trope an alphaputz hero and an 11th hour too stupid to live decision by the heroine I hate hate hate the lust at first sight trope In this story that felt as just an excuse to throw in some unnecessary make outsex scenes in to fill out the word count It was totally unrealistic that these two characters would get all hot and heavy within hours of meeting The fact that they do made me think of all the ridiculous suspense romances where the couple is on the run but take a break for smexy times Both characters lost some credibility in my eyes I didn't like Garrick Don't get me wrong Garrick is a good herowhen he's not a total alphaputz The real problem is there was no need for him being an alphaputz and it came out of nowhere He might as well have been some paranormal alpha shifter who sniffs out 'The One' and then goes about controlling her until she loves him because they are meant to be together But because this is scifi rather than PNR it was explained as his strong sense of needing to protect everything and everyone YAWN What's possibly the biggest crime in my book the major TSTL moment where the heroine has all the important information and still makes the Martyr Sue wrong decision that puts everyone at risk To be honest this was lazy writing and poor editing because the whole thing is just a weak set up for the action packed finale Normally the TSTL moment alone would make me drop this to a two star review TSTL plus the alphaputz and unnecessaryout of place sex scenes would certainly drop it to a two or one star yet the overall plot and the universe is so completely awesome that it saves this story from becoming just 'meh'I'm calling this scifirotica because the sex feels tacked on and doesn't enhance the overall story It certainly doesn't add to the romance which I felt was anorexic Despite all the nitpicking criticism I did like huge portions of this story and would recommend it to fans of scifi romance fans with the caveat that you need to be forgiving of major weaknesses in the storytelling ARC provided by publisher via Netgalley
