A Convenient Bride for the Soldier is the first book in The Society of Wicked Gentlemen series by Christine MerrillGeorgiana Knight is being pushed towards marrying her step mother's cousin who is only after her dowry and is everything no woman would want in a man In order to show her father that the man is perverted she means to catch him out in an infamous club where anything goes Her attempts go horribly wrong when not only does she not catch him out he catches her at her game and the only way she can save face is to be rescued by the club's ownerFrederick Challenger is that owner and inadvertently he is the one that caused Georgiana's plan to backfire A gentleman through and through he feels honour bound to rescue her and does it the only way he can by saying that they are betrothed and then of course having to propose and marry her afterwardsThere is a huge physical attraction between Fred and Georgiana but his demands that she be everything that is prim and proper goes against the grain She's been under her step mother's thumb for so long she needs to be able to have a little freedom now Can she prove to him that there is a middle ground where one can live a little without bringing scandal down around their heads This story was very much a romance and nice to read I definitely enjoyed Fred and Georgiana's story but I think a sub plot or two would have been a bonus and it could have had a bit drama Georgiana's step mother could have had a much bigger part with her evil ways and I would have loved to see the response her father had when he finds out something that his wife has done It's the detail like that which I find can really add to a story On the plus side there were some lovely laugh out loud moments and the perfect ending with a novel way of declaring love I will definitely be reading the following books in the series but do hope they are a little excitingI voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers' copy of this book

Bought for Ten Thousand Pounds Ex soldier Frederick Challenger may own a share of London's most secret gentlemen's club but he has long since stopped sampling its delightsu. I've given this a B at AARChristine Merrill joins forces with three other Harleuin Historical authors to bring us a new series of four books under the title The Society of Wicked Gentlemen  The gentlemen in uestion are a group of friends of differing backgrounds who met at university and who now jointly own a rather scandalous and extremely popular club at which members of the ton can freely indulge their vices whether their preference is for strong drink high stakes gaming sexual peccadillos or a mixture of all threeMr formerly Major – Frederick Challenger was before he went to war uite as ready as any of the club’s clientele to indulge in those very same vices  Coming from a family whose name is a byword for scandal Fred’s way of dealing with the fact that his parents and siblings were known for their many excesses affairs and public embarrassments was to out debauch them all with his wild ways and scandalous behaviour  But now that’s all changed A veteran of Waterloo Fred discovered he preferred the organisation of military life to hedonism and he has turned his life around to become a sober uptight and somewhat joyless businessman who now regards the sort of organised debauchery to be found at Vitium et Virtus Vice and Virtue  as something almost mind numbingly dullGeorgiana Knight’s stepmother is absolutely desperate to get her step daughter married off and out of her home and is constantly pressuring her to accept the suit of Sir Nash Bowles a relative of hers whom Georgiana very much dislikes  When Georgiana’s maid tells her that Bowles has a reputation worse than any rake she decides she has to take steps to avoid marrying a lecher and comes up with a – rather silly it has to be said – plan to expose his unsavoury activities by going to the notorious club of which he is a member seeing what goes on for herself and then telling her father why she doesn’t want to marry him  It’s only when she finds herself in the middle of a darkened room surrounded by men eager to bid for the opportunity to deflower her that Georgiana realises her scheme might not have been such a good one after allWhen a masked but clearly furious man outbids everyone disperses the crowd and then literally carries her out of the room Georgiana doesn’t uite know whether to be afraid or annoyed  It’s only when he reveals his identity that she decides on annoyed;  ever since Frederick Challenger refused an introduction to her one evening at Almack’s she’s had the feeling he’s forever finding fault with herFrederick is similarly irritated to discover the identity of his ‘purchase’  Ever since he overheard her stepmother describing him to Georgiana as eligible and rich he has retreated behind a wall of ice and done his best to avoid her  Each time he has seen her she is doing something outside the bounds of propriety and given the reputation owned by his family the last thing he needs is to be associated with a woman who can’t seem to abide by the rules of society  An association is however unavoidable when Sir Nash Bowles insists that he will ensure word gets around about Georgiana’s appearance at the club unless she marries him leaving Frederick no alternative but to offer for her himself  He might not like the woman but condemning her to a life with a pervert like Bowles is something he cannot bring himself to doGeorgina recognises that she’s trapped between a rock and a hard place Frederick Challenger wouldn’t have been her husband of choice but he’s most definitely the lesser of two evils and she agrees to marry him after he makes it clear that theirs will be a marriage in name only and that they will live separate lives When Georgiana greets this idea enthusiastically Fred can’t help but be just a little put out – and wonders what on earth he’s doing depriving himself of the only benefit he could gain from their union Georgiana is lovely vivacious and he’s strongly attracted to her yet no matter how many times his friends tell him how lucky he is to have found such a beautiful clever and delightful bride and that she’s just the person to pull him out of the funk he’s been in since he returned from the Peninsula all he sees is the potential for disaster and indiscretionIt would be easy to see Fred simply as a stiff necked over starched prig who is intent on maintaining the double standards so prevalent at the time the book is set Because of this it’s easy to understand why a woman like Georgiana – who has spent the last several years listening to the endless criticisms of her stepmother – would resent his attempts to dictate her behaviour and insist that she behave as a pattern card of propriety Yet through it all he is somehow a sympathetic character especially when his family circumstances are taken into account He’s the only responsible adult in his family and desperately wants to make sure that his younger siblings don’t fall into the same patterns of behaviour as their elders Because of this he imposes a higher standard upon himself – and by extension his wife – and has encased himself in a prison of his own making and become a victim of his own inflexibilitySo often in this sort of story – spirited heroine meets starchy hero – the heroine is childish and deliberately contrary getting herself into stupid scrapes because she ignores good advice and is generally a pain in the arse That isn’t the case here and I really appreciated Ms Merrill’s presentation of Georgiana as thoroughly likeable and not at all TSTL She does make mistakes but they are either the result of ignorance such as when she goes shopping with Fred’s sister in law without knowing he wouldn’t have wanted it or because of a situation created as a result of her stepmother’s dislike of her Much of the time Fred and Georgiana’s battle of wits is lively and amusing and the attraction between them is strong and well developed so that by the time they finally hit the sheets the sexual tension is so thick it could be cut with a knife The addition of the physical dimension to their married life uickly dissipates a lot of the strain that has existed between them and they finally start to develop a better understanding of each otherI enjoyed the book although a couple of flaws have affected my final grade Firstly Fred’s unbending attitude towards Georgiana goes on for perhaps a bit too long and it starts to seem that every time they reach a kind of understanding something happens to push them back to suare one After a while this got frustrating and ultimately it leads to the second flaw in that the story is somewhat unbalanced The final chapters and ending are very rushed and I can’t help wishing that the author had spent time on the resolution to the couple’s difficulties and their ILY moments and less on setting up the conflict which is very well established by the half way point and didn’t need to be hammered home to uite such an extentWith those reservations expressed however A Convenient Bride for the Soldier is entertaining and the two central characters are engaging and well written I’m happy to give it a ualified recommendation

A Convenient Bride for the SoldierNtil a beautiful woman auctions her innocenceGeorgiana Knight's plan had been to lure in a villain but instead she's trapped the devil himself And now to protect her reputa. Good book Georgiana is a young woman trapped in a no win situation She doesn't get along with her stepmother who wants her married off and out of the house Unfortunately her only suitor is a relative of her stepmother's one who hides an unsavory reputation under a veneer of respectability George thinks that her only option is to get the proof of Nash's activities and denounce him to her father She comes up with a plan to sneak into a gentlemen's club and use herself as bait to catch him Instead she is caught by one of the owners and to save her reputation has to marry himFred and his friends started the club after they were done with university as a way to indulge their wild behavior It was great when they were younger but Fred saw a different side of life during the war and the debaucheries of the club no longer appeal When he spotted George in the club and saw who was after her he had to intervene He did not realize who he'd rescued until she was unmaskedFred and George have a history and not a pleasant one She had run afoul of him when her stepmother was overheard commenting on his suitability as a mate He has made her disdain for her plain ever since even though she hadn't done anything herself Also her stepmother's constant criticism has sometimes caused her to rebel in ways that can be seen as inappropriate further irritating Fred Neither was at all happy to be forced into marriage and agree to a marriage in name only and living separate lives George looks forward to the freedom allowed a married woman and isn't at all happy when Fred lays down a long list of rules for her to follow to avoid any hint of scandal George isn't about to go from one prison to anotherI will say that it took me a little while to warm up to both George and Fred I thought George was a bit too headstrong which didn't mix well with her naiveté She didn't think through to the problems that could arise from her plan to stop Sir Nash While I understood her problems with her stepmother who was a real witch of a woman there were times George might have been smarter just to play along However by the time the wedding came I was looking forward to seeing what kind of havoc she would inflict on Fred to get him to loosen up Fred gave the initial impression of being a snob and a prig which seemed incongruous with his profession as the owner of a scandalous gentlemen's club His attitude became understandable when his family circumstances are explained Though in his early life he reacted to their scandalous behavior by trying to outdo them after the war he changed his life around in an attempt to provide a better example for his younger siblings Unfortunately he goes overboard and makes life miserable for himself and those around himAfter the wedding the fun really picked up Fred is determined to keep George under control and she is eually determined to be herself Under it all is a chemistry that neither can deny but don't want to admit George is spirited but doesn't purposely go against Fred's wishes She just wants him to realize that she isn't the immature child he thinks she is She was a little nervous about the shopping trip with her sister in law but the woman is family so she thought it would be fine Fred's reaction to her dress and his actions at the ball that night made her feel wonderful His fury over the source of the dress was excessive considering those actions I loved his confusion at her willingness to leave London since he thought it was a punishment and she was looking forward to it I enjoyed seeing Fred's battle with himself as he tried to reconcile his attraction and fascination with her and his certainty that she was a disaster waiting to happen I loved seeing the attraction between them build and enjoyed when they finally gave in to it The closeness brought on by their physical connection also gives them a chance to get to know and understand each other better George finds herself wanting a real marriage and feels that they are well on the way to having that However Fred is still haunted by his fears and makes a decision that drives George away I ached for her and how her attempt to be fully a part of Fred's life instead broke her heart I liked her inner strength as she dealt with her pain I loved the scene on Bond Street and the eye opening effect it had on Fred His big moment at the end was funny sweet and hopeful for a new beginningI liked meeting the other partners in the club also and look forward to their stories I liked their support of Fred at his wedding even though they uestioned what he was doing I loved Oliver's chat with Fred a few days later the change in his feelings about the marriage and what brought it about It had me laughing out loud especially Fred's reaction I also liked Jake He seems to be as haunted as Fred I liked how he tried to make Fred see that George was what he needed to bring him back to life I was intrigued by their comments about their other partner the missing and possibly dead Nick I suspect that we will be learning about him as the series goes on
