Suirrel's Family TreeKes an oak tree an oak tree and what makes a suirrel a suirrel In Suirrel's Family Tree things aren't always what they seem As suirrel searches for finds and hides. I'd give this one a 35 because it has plenty of appeal for young readers and interesting tidbits of information about suirrels and acorns in the back matter Although I wasn't a big fan of the rhyming text I did enjoy how the book's title seems to imply that it will be about the offspring of the suirrel and while to some extent that is true it's also largely about the tree that provides a home and food for this species Created with colored pencil and then scanned digitally the illustrations make readers feel as though they are right there in each scene with the suirrel as she's gathering food for now and later Just like when humans pick strawberries and blackberries and of them land in their mouths than in the bucket this suirrel can't resist doing some munching as she looks for nuts While it's clear that suirrels rely on oak trees and the nuts they provide trees also rely on suirrels to spread and plant their acorns It's pretty fascinating to think how many acorns go unfound during the winter months and now few only one in 10000 become mature oak trees This title would be a good introduction to a natural science unit for youngsters
