A Death at Eastwick The Eastwick Mansion Mysteries #1 S who bribed John’s way into his prestigious collegeKicked out of school John returns home to his distraught mother at their lakeside mansion to bury his father There John’s world continues to crumble beneath his feet the will that the family lawyer reads bears no resemblance to the last version that the late John Eastwick Sr created In fact John Eastwick Sr has divided his estate not only between his son and wife but the family chef their loyal lawyer his young secretary and his estranged brother John wonders is his father trying to atone for past mistakes and what other secr This was actually better than I expected I went into the book thinking that this was going to be a John Jr centred story because of the synopsis and it wasn't There's no central character who moves the plot forward like some kind of Nancy Drew or something Everyone got a spotlight and the readers got to know what went through their heads as the story progressed The characterization was simply good Multifaceted flawed and full of personalities the characters were solid suspicious and interesting in their own ways The mystery was well written it managed to keep me guessing throughout the entire read though the twist at the end was not really shocking The writing style reminded me of a classic murder mystery story especially with the way the characters were introduced It was atmospheric I kept on picturing the setting as this old fashioned mansion normally seen during the Victorian era until the mention of laptop and TV gently reminded me that this was all set in a modern world Since this is a short book the story kept on moving forward with every new chapter and a nice pace I have to say however that at times it got bogged down with the backstory of some characters which I personally think was extraneous and could be cut out of the book I didn't mind reading about them at first but after a while it got boring and a bit dragging It was still enjoyable nonetheless I don't know why I thought this book was a middle grade book when it clearly isn't The main character is 21 years old in this But now that I've read the whole thing it can actually work in my opinion as one In a way And perhaps that's why I was able to read and enjoy it than expected It also has this ‘moral of the story’ value to it that young readers could take away from A uick and easy read A Death At Eastwick is a perfect book for when you want some simple old fashioned mystery with a modern setting to breeze through in a few days
