Growing up during the 1980s in the safe complacency of the Australian suburbs Plum Coyle should be happy B Contains mild spoilers don't worry nothing that will come close to ruining the bookWhen I checked this book out at my local library the lady at the checkout counter looked at it and said beautiful cover beautiful title which made me think to myself this book is gonna be awesome As you can see from my 25 star review I didn't like it very much Reading it made me feel uncomfortable sad and sort of dirty; like you've been sweating at the beach on a 100 degree summer day but you couldn't go in the water So you're covered in grimy sand and etc and you feel plainly gross I realize that sounds rather odd and awkward but hey that pretty much sums up how I feel about this bookPlum's friends are plainly terrible her parents are sort of sad and their sadness never gets resolved in the book it just seems to be thrown in there for dramatic effect Her brothers are also a drag Justin totally screws up as you will see when you get further into the book Her other brother Cydar almost made it seem like he was in love with Plum It may be that this was set in the 80's and written in Australia I don't know because I was born in the 90's and back then I was still a child I've also never been to Australia so I wouldn't have any idea The writing was I will admit lyrical It was very strange but at the same time beautiful It's probably the only reason I rated the book two starsAt the beginning I really liked Maureen then I gradually started to dislike her and then I just plainly felt bad for the woman All the characters had some kinds of issues in their lives which was I guess good; it made them real It's just that there were so many issues just tossed in that they never really got resolved which made the end sort of jagged and awkwardly stitched together It also made me wonder why was this book written? I never really got anything from it I know sometimes you have to look harder but it's difficult to look past the writing characters and the overall mood of the book and find the reason There were so many morals in this story I never got the actual point of itview spoilerWho else felt extremely bad for Maureen at the end when she suffocated David? Because it said something like she could start fresh again I just felt so bad for her Oh and did her husband leave her and Justin no longer wanted her so she was hopeless and decided that the only way she could be free is to kill Davy? I hated that ending I just wanted to take Davy and hug him I just read the last paragraph over and over hide spoiler

ButterflyOval of her cruel and fickle girlfriends and most of all she hates her awkward changing body with a passio This book felt like it didn’t really fit into either a YA or adult category comfortably It was certainly YA than adult but there were very adult type themes that I really wouldn’t want a 14 year old the age of the main character reading The main character also seemed a strange mix of mature and immature being observant of things than I would suspect most 14 year olds are normally but then thinking things that made me roll my eyes because they seem so childish But then perhaps that is just par for the course with most adolescentsIt’s set somewhere in Australia but I don’t recall it ever mentioning specifically where Some of the descriptions are beautiful but that is probably the best part of the storyThis was my second Sonya Hartnett and I enjoyed my first The Children of the King than this one 25★
