I've often heard criticism that The Princess And the Goblin hasn't aged well and I would say in a sense that this is true Its writing style is clearly of a particular time period and its fantasy elements might seem too simplistic for generations who live with Harry Potter Game of Thrones Merlin and some of the vast world building media in the fantasy genre Still there's a kind of nostalgic admirable charm to this little book Its message is clear and universal the characters are likeable and it plays out like an old fairy tale where friendship prevails in the darkest momentsHere's some interesting trivia by the way Mollie Sudgen who played one of my favourite fictional characters Mrs Slocombe on the 1970's British series Are You Being Served did the voice of Looti a bumbling nanny from the 1990's animated film adaptation of The Princess And the Goblin This book has also been said by some to have helped inspire films such as Jim Henson's Labyrinth a 1980's cult hit starring David Bowie in role of Jareth the Goblin King The Princess And the Goblin follows Irene a young princess and Curdie name makes me think of the cheese curds they sell here at the Sobey's near my house a miner's boy from a poorer family Irene faces the terrible prospect of being forcibly married off to a goblin but with the help of Curdie her beloved father and a mysterious grandmother with supernatural powers Irene won't go down without a fight The book version written many years before the 1990's film was ever produced is a bit serious than the film it features a couple of rather violent scenes as well as some scenes of minor character peril but the book still retains an innocent uality to itself where most of the story is simply benign fantasy and funWhile the story might not win over many modern readers I think that after over a century of popularity earning it a classic status The Princess And the Goblin will still have a place in children's literature and fantasy fiction for many years to come It's a great little book with some unexpected surprises and I'd still recommend it to both younger and older readers alike

A great fairytale Very reminiscent in a way of CS Lewis' writing so I was not surprised to find that MacDonald actually heavily inspired not only Lewis but also JRR Tolkien as well Classically written fantasy with strong allegorical thematic tones The Princess and the Goblin is both heartwarming and a fun adventure I do wish we got a bit of an explanation on the princess's grandmother as that was the one aspect of the story that goes totally unexplained Although I'd wager a guess that faith and the power of belief play a larger part in her presentation than I've given the story credit for having just finished it tonight
