Helliconia Summer the second volume in the Helliconia trilogy is superb old school science fiction The novel is superior to Helliconia Spring 1982 partly because the world it depicts is far richer in summer than it was in its emergent state in spring The novel also contains much detail about humanity's observational satellite Avernus in orbit around the planet as well as Helliconia's stellar and biological history The novel's world building is splendidly detailed fascinating and ultimately entirely satisfying During summer the planet's human like life forms are dominant and their civilization is akin to that of Earth's late middle ages The planet's other intelligent inhabitants the Phagors are much passive during summer surviving and biding their time until winter returns The Phagors are curiously compelling aliens despite being mostly impassive and enigmatic Although Phagor culture is less sophisticated than that of the 'humans' they make them seem childish and vain in comparisonPart of what makes Helliconia Summer so satisfying is the weave of complex multiple plot strands that also feature well rounded and believable characters The characters are generally dynamic and relatably human in both their motivations and flaws I couldn't help but get caught up in the characters individual stories as they struggled to cope with the planet's continual cultural and geographical shifts Like the first novel there are long sections detailing particular narrative threads however there is much dynamism to the narrative in general making it far compelling than the first novel Despite being nearly 600 pages in length I really did not want Helliconia Summer to end it was thoroughly enjoyable and I couldn't help but wonder why it has never been made into a series akin to something like Game of Thrones; it certainly has the complexity and scope to satisfy most modern viewers even those who failed to understand Game of Thrones denouement

Science fiction on the grandest possible scale is about right The political intrigue you find in these novels is about the standard for post Dune SF but Aldiss dispenses with the pulp conventions that particular series holds fast to—both stylistically and in terms of the Hero's Journey stuff that Dune vacillates between criticizing and doubling down on The sheer scale of the planetary invention is sometimes staggering In each of the novels up till this point Aldiss focuses on a particular group of people—in Spring it's a few generations of people who occupy EmbruddockOldorando while here in Summer he narrows the scope chronologically but expands it geographically tracing the movements of the many people involved in a particular bout of scheming and warring—but what really sets these novels apart is the slow almost leisurely pace through which he wades through all this enveloping the reader with details relating to religion culture technology geography ecology linguistics and almost any other field you could name The best moments and the moments that are most truly SF are when he zooms out and gives the reader a bird's eye view of some massive geological or climatological shift and its ecological implications or the entire social history of a particular custom or the complicated life cycle of a particular organism—often interrupting a scene conversation or battle to do so but always with a purpose To tell you the truth I could have used stuff like that Looking over the reviews it seems a lot of readers disagreed Dune showed us what you can do when you not only have a lot of neat ideas but also care to integrate them closely enough to give the illusion of a living world but if I'm being honest the world of Dune is pretty one dimensional when you cut through the convoluted plotting Its social history is essentially a binary opposition between hardshipvirility and comfortdecadence and its ecology is defined by the relationships between a few organisms sandworms humans plants and what else Maybe I've read too much Delany and Viriconium to really believe in thoroughly mapped out secondary worlds but for what it's worth Helliconia is the most convincing such alien world I've spent time inHere's to hoping I can track down a matching mass market paperback copy of Winter to complete my set

World building to the maaaaxx The hugevaried ecosystempeoples of Helliconia are portrayed in astonishing detail and at great length However the underlying story of political turmoilmanoeuverings doesn't really warrant being strung out to such great length The strength of the first book Helliconia Spring was the changes over generations whereas this is just one brief episode and we get no real sense of Helliconia's Great Year advancing it's just hotter everywhere 35 stars which should be rounded up to 4 for sheer writing achievement but rounding down to 3 for disappointment after Spring
