The first part of this epic novel is a comedy of manners set in San Francisco and centering on a lust triangle involving an AIDS activist turned public health bureaucrat a crazy mixed up art studentstripper and a lowbrow gay novelist Somehow Killian renders these characters as amusing caricatures yet also makes them believable and sympathetic For the second part of the novel the scene segues to a small depressed town in Eastern California and the plot is invaded by a pair of vile con men and an utterly original and bizarre small town ueen obsessed with Audrey Hepburn The goose pimplingly Noir ish nightmare of meth murder and madness that then unfolds is all the chilling for it's juxtaposition against the the glittering world of urban A gays I should also mention that Killian is a pithy and clever prose stylist His most distinctive and charming trick is alluding to a dazzling uantity of cultural signifiers in a manner that both amuses the reader and grounds the story firmly in time In conclusion there is no reason for anyone not to read and be astounded by this novel

San Franciscans and Adam Radley a perfectionist porn director specializing in gay spanking videos When D’Allesandro who has lost his savings to Radley threatens to expose the racket things turn violentKevin Killian is a poet novelist critic and playwright who most recently co edited My Vocabulary Did This to Me The Collected Poetry of Jack Spicer He lives in San Francis. I got to 65% of the book and I think I’m doneI heard of this book when it was nominated for a LAMBDA Literary award although the awards people themselves don’t speak well of the book“the initial bulk of the story feels disjointed making it difficult to follow the plot and hard to initially become invested in the fate of the protagonists If you’re able to make it through to Part II however you’ll be rewarded with an engrossing and compelling examination of a small town gay man’s descent into obsession addiction and crime that comes close to making you forget about the fractured nature of the preceding chapters”So I made it to Part II holding out hope as the review suggests Part one was indeed difficult to follow fractured and in bad need of a re write This was made worse by the ebook version I purchased for the Kindle from the publisher which didn't have divisions or page breaks between sections so it all ran together and one character would switch to the next without any notification Also poorly formatted in lots of parts don't know why no one could be bothered to fix thisI get to part two and I read“Maybe the genius who invented cellophane came to it by accident just started seeing through everything one hundred per cent because he or she was in love with someone who would turn out to be all wrong for them”This didn’t seem to make any sense to me I also started reading of a subplot to defraud people out of money by making them HIV positive and thought to myself “What the hell am I reading” Like John Irving’s In One Person I’m reading it kind of going along and not liking it or disliking it and then something happens you really dislike and I go “What the hell am I reading” and stop I liked the fact that everyone thought the author in part one was Armistead Maupin Other than that I had real trouble figuring out who was who and why I should care

SpreadeagleLesandro now clinging onto the last shreds of life after several decades fighting off AIDS The young unstable art student Eric Avery a fan of D’Allesandro’s finagles a room in the vast California Street brownstone Isham and Kramer share On the fringes of the story lurk two shady brothers Gary Radley a grifter who lives by selling fake anti AIDS drugs to deluded New Age. Killian's latest is not only highly readable but really funny funny in the witty way he has of referencing pop culture and coming up with fresh analogies and twists on cliches like this gem 'play with puppies and you're gonna get licked' Oh and you should see these puppiesreally well drawn twisted types Killian is so good at assuming multiple narrators This book really shimmers and cracklesIt's a truly epic SF story including art student turned porn star AIDS epidemic careerism and hucksterism crystal meth the ghost of Sam Dellasandro con men murderers junkies Armistead Maupin the weirdness of the Central Valley and of course Kevin himself If there is one SF book to read this decade I think this is it I was really impressed very much a tour de force of all the great stuff he's done thru the years
